Matoka Perry, 82, of Elizabethton, a very special Mom and Grandmother, was peacefully called home to be with the Lord, on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, from Life Care Center of Elizabethton. She was affectionately known as “Mam-maw Toka” to many through the years. She was the daughter of the late Wiley and Sarah Funk Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Perry; a sister, Shelby Smith; and a brother, Oneal Grindstaff.
Mrs. Perry retired from the Carter County Extension Office as a program assistant after 20 years service. She was an active member of Hunter First Baptist Church. She was a lifetime member of the Carter County Rescue Squad Crewettes and was a former caregiver at Hunter First Baptist Daycare.
She loved her Lord, her family and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Missie Barnett and husband Allen, Elizabethton; a son, Robert Perry and wife Lenice, Elizabethton; her grandchildren, Jeremy Perry and wife Holly, Piney Flats, Matthew Perry and wife Juliana, Elizabethton, David Perry and wife Ashley, Elizabethton, Shane Heaton, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Sara Hollier and husband Paul, Fletcher, N.C., Melissa VanHuss and husband Brad, Telford, and Diana Barnett, Elizabethton; and 10 great-grandchildren. Several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
The celebration of life service for Mrs. Perry will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Rev. Rusty Verran and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, or at the home at anytime. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, February 1, in the Combs Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Jeremy Perry, Matt Perry, David Perry, Shane Heaton, Paul Hollier and Gabe Treadway. Honorary pallbearers will be her many friends and neighbors. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Life Care Center of Elizabethton for all their love and care shown to Mrs. Perry during her stay, and to her special friends, Eva Heatherly and Willie Frazier, and special friends from Life Care and Eva Oliver.
