Mary Ellen Lewis, 83, of Pensacola, Fla., formerly of Norton, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at the West Florida Hospital in Pensacola following a brief illness.
She was the daughter of the late John “Ham” Potter and Hessie Andrews Potter and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Rex Ross Lewis, on August 3, 1997; an infant daughter, Karen Lewis; a sister, Ellen Bandy; and a brother, Homer Potter.
Mrs. Lewis was a retired factory worker and had worked at various jobs. She was a member of the Akron Baptist Faith Temple and she was an avid gardener and quilter.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Wilma Weir and Joseph H. Weir II, Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Larry Lewis, Pensacola, Fla.; a step-granddaughter, Gretchen Weir, Brooksville, Ohio; and a brother and sister-in-law, John “Junior” and Shirley Potter, Barberton, Ohio. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends in the Fireside Room at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, Tenn., from noon until 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 19. The graveside service for Mrs. Lewis will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whitehead Cemetery in Butler, Tenn., with Rev. Doug Ranshaw officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
