A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Elizabeth Caldwell Freeman. Mary Belle was a retired employee of the Carter County School System having worked at the Cloudland High School Cafeteria for 23 years. She was a member of the Crabtree Free Will Baptist Church for more than 70 years. One of her greatest joys was singing for the Lord with the Crabtree Quartet. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone she met. No one ever left her table hungry. She showed her love of God in everything she did. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Lyons, who died February 20, 1991; her sisters, Maxie Arrowood, Mildred Stout and Willie Taylor; and a brother, Blaine Freeman.
Survivors include a daughter: Judy Hughes and her husband Reece, Roan Mountain; a son: Jeff Lyons, Newland, N.C.; a granddaughter: Traci Barnett and her husband Kim, Roan Mountain; three grandsons: Troy Hughes, Roan Mountain, and Austin and Tanner Lyons, both of Newland, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren: Chloe VanDyke, Brooke Hughes, Logan Barnett, Parker Hughes, Noah Barnett, Kaylee Hughes and Braydon Hughes; as sister: Marie Hagie, Roan Mountain; a special cousin: Joda Ollis; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Peterson, the Rev. Jerry McCoury and the Rev. Dan Blevins officiating. Graveside service and Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday November 19, 2012 in the Moreland Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Monday will be: Kim Barnett, Reece Hughes, Troy Hughes, Dana Dean Young, Chris Barnett and Mike Hagie. The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the Staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center for the love and care that they provided and to Dr. Jerry Gastineau. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of a daughter & son-in-law: Judy & Reece Hughes, 257 Heaton Creek Road, Roan Mountain. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Monday.
