Lena Roberta Babb Phipps, 88, of Hampton, Tenn., made her heavenly journey on October 15, 2012, surrounded by her family.
She was a daughter of the late Alfred C. Babb and Rettie Ann Medlin Babb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Phipps, in 1974; her son, Alan Phipps, in 1996; 10 brothers, Otis Babb, Marshall Babb, Guy Babb, Dayton Babb, Junior Babb, Cecil Babb, Carson Babb, Arch Babb, Freddie Babb and Marvin Babb; and a stepbrother, David Head.
Mrs. Phipps worked for the Carter County School System in the cafeterias of Gap Creek Elementary, Southside Elementary and Happy Valley Middle School. She was a true child of God and was a member for more than 25 years of the Laurels Church of God and for the past several years, Deliverance Church of God.
She was the kindest of souls and was adored by everyone who met her. She had a meek and humble spirit and was a true prayer warrior. She loved to cook and some of her happiest moments were having all of her family and friends around the table.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ruby Lyons, Hampton, Tenn., Joe Phipps and Rena Fletcher, Lincolnton, N.C., Loretta Tester and husband Roy and their children and grandchildren, Johnson City, Tenn., Betty Wood, Elizabethton, Tenn., Johnny Phipps and wife Debbie, Sims, N.C.; grandchildren, Sandra Dugger and husband Leonard, Johnson City, Tenn., Joe Phipps Jr. and wife Roslyn, James Phipps and wife Molly, Justin Phipps and wife Stephanie, all of North Carolina, Dale Tester, Johnson City, Tenn., Letisha Michonski, Springboro, Ohio, Michael Phipps, Mechanicsville, Va., Mark Wood and Emily Montgomery and husband Ben, Elizabethton, Tenn., Elisa Cupp and husband Robert, Michael McDuffie and Daniel Phipps, Sims, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Rebecca Dugger, Samantha Phipps, Sidney Phipps, Sarah Phipps, Bailey Michonski, Alan Michonski, Kylar Wood, Jaylin Wood, Madison Montgomery, Christopher Wood, Arabella Wood, Isaiah Cupp, Jeremiah Cupp, Hannah McDuffie and Evan McDuffie; three sisters, Gladys Weaver, Wanda Presnell and Verna Fulwiler and husband Bob, all of Johnson City; and a stepbrother, Jimmy Head and wife Audrey, Kingsport, Tenn.
The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, and at the home at other times. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday with the Reverend Hobart Bradshaw and the Reverend Eugene Penland officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 18, in the Sparks Cemetery, Elizabethton, Tenn. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Joe Phipps, James Phipps, Justin Phipps, Dale Tester, Michael Phipps, Mark Wood, Michael McDuffie and Daniel Phipps.
