Johnnie Ray Simerly, 75, Johnson City, went home to be with his Lord, Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late J.D. and Daisy Morton Simerly.
Mr. Simerly was a 1957 graduate of Hampton High School and attended Steed College and East Tennessee State University. He served in the United States Army during the Berlin Crisis. He was a retired truck driver with the Central Transport Company, Kingsport.
Mr. Simerly was a member and deacon of Midway Baptist Church and a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Glen Simerly, and a niece, Amanda Shell.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Viola Johnson Simerly; two daughters, Donna Lisa Mizell, Hampton, and Lori Ann Whitaker and husband Christopher Todd, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Caitlin Fenley, Jordan “Joe” Cosey and fiancée Heather, Tiffany Dye and husband Lance and Melea Fenley; two great-grandchildren, Elijah Street and Jordan Ray Cosey; one aunt, Martha Lee Harrell; and a cousin, Gary Harrell.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Ray Simerly will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 29, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bill Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Whitehead Cemetery, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family and many friends. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and his caregivers for the excellent care that was received. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence.
