James D. “Jim” Curtis, 78, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord Friday, November 16, 2012 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Mabscott, W. Va., he was a son of the late James Ross and Laura Jane Acord Curtis. Jim was a retired Minister in the Christian Church after 39 years of service. He was a graduate of Johnson Bible College, Knoxville. His first pastorate was the Northport Church of Christ, Newport, Tenn., after that he pastored in Indiana. Jim served as pastor of West Side Christian Church, Elizabethton from 1972 to 1998. He loved his Lord and loved to be with his children and grandchildren. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Jones.
Survivors include his wife: Helen Hatcher Curtis; three sons and daughters-in-law: James Michael and Jennifer Curtis, Mt. Carmel, Tenn., Jeffrey Mark and Jeanne Curtis, Dublin, Va., and Steven Russell and Patricia Curtis, Seymour, Tenn.; seven grandchildren: Dylan, Ben Curtis, Mt. Carmel, Tenn., Dustin Curtis, Jeremy Curtis and his wife Maggie, Columbus, Ind., Ashley Curtis, Dublin, Va., Will and Pexton Curtis, Seymour, Tenn.; his great-grandchildren: Aiden Curtis and Josslynn Curtis, both of Columbus, Ind.; and two nieces.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 18, 2012 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Ken Overdorf, minister, officiating. Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence.
