Granger Fanning

Walsie “Granger” Fanning, 55, of Mocksville, N.C., passed away Thursday, November 1, 2012, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, Winston-Salem, N.C., after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was a native of Unicoi County and a son of the late Clarence Fanning and Leona Griffith Fanning Toney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Dennis and Timothy, and several beloved aunts and uncles.

Granger dearly loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 16-1/2 years, Debbie Gentry Fanning; two sons, John Fanning and Jimmy Fanning, New Port Richey, Fla.; a step-son, Paul Robinson, Mountain City, Tenn.; two step-daughters, Kelly Robinson Rupard and husband Jon, Mountain City, Tenn., and Jennifer Robinson Cohen, Mocksville, N.C.; four brothers, Jim Fanning and wife, Ann, Oxford, Pa., Doug Fanning, Jack Fanning and Joe Fanning and wife, Kim, all of West Chester, Pa.; two sisters, Kelly Callazo, Elkton, Md., and Sharmon Vargo and husband Jason, Aston, Pa.; his precious granddaughters, Katelyn Cohen and Isabella Fanning; a sister-in-law, Suzette Hernandez and husband, Froy, Johnson City, Tenn.; and his Uncle Pat Griffith and Uncle S.G. Griffith, both of Erwin, Tenn. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and special friends, Mike and Tonya Bier, Dennis and Kathy Thacker, Jim and Lisa Powell and Jimmy Hankus, also survive.

Granger was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Elizabethton, Tenn. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne as a Ranger. He was also proud of his Cherokee heritage.

A Celebration of Life for Mr. Fanning will be held at Memorial Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 8, with Rev. Ron Owens officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Fanning, Jack Fanning, Paul Robinson and Jon Rupard. The interment service will be immediately following the service at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tenn. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Cancer Society, c/o Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 377 Hospital Street, Suite 103, Mocksville, NC 27028.
