George “Wash” Putman, 93, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was the son of the late Charles Sidney and Roxanna Bowman Putman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Wilson Putman, on March 25, 2003; brothers, Willard Putman, Jason Putman, Elmer Putman and James Putman; and sisters, Viola Hughes and Elsie Putman.
Mr. Putman was a native of Buladean, N.C., but had lived in Roan Mountain most of his life. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church.
Mr. Putman was a member of Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 566 F&AM. He loved working in his garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with his friends.
Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Stocton and husband Wayne and Alma Gouge and husband Larry, all of Roan Mountain, and Mary Elizabeth Guy and husband Brad, Elizabethton; a son, Charles Eugene Putman and wife Carron, Roan Mountain; grandchildren, Rodney Stocton, Shannon Forbes, Karen Carr, Jeffery Gouge, Christopher Gouge, Judy Williams, Jessica Oakes, Caleb Guy and Georgia Guy; great-grandchildren, Tristyl Stocton, Brett Stocton, Tony Carr, Preston Forbes, Jonathan Forbes, Cierra Gouge, Levi Gouge, Johnathan Gouge, Tyler Hill, Clayton Williams, Abbey Gouge, Maggie Gouge, Walker Gouge, Carley Gouge, Peyton Oakes and Jerrica Oakes; and a step-grandchild, Josh Dillinger. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Putman will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Burbank Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain, Tenn., with Rev. Randy English officiating. A eulogy will be given by his grandsons, Rodney Stocton, Chris Gouge and Jeff Gouge. Music will be under the direction of Tristyl Stocton, Brett Stocton and Beth Stocton. The family will receive friends at Burbank Free Will Baptist Church from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the Hughes Cemetery in Buladean, N.C. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Burbank Free Will Baptist Church at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday to go in procession.
