Ellen Marie Wilson Canter, 79, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, September 30, 2013, at Asbury Place.
Mrs. Canter was born November 4, 1933, in Elizabethton and was the daughter of the late Hobert and Belle Wilson.
Mrs. Canter was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church for the past 65 years, where she and her husband helped establish the church. Mrs. Canter and her husband also owned several businesses over the past 65 years in Elizabethton, including Canter’s Market, Canter’s Greenhouse, Canter’s Auction House, Canter’s Plumbing and Electric and Canter’s Mobile Home Park, before retiring.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, six sisters, and by one very special grandson, Tony Canter, in February 2013.
Mrs. Canter is survived by her husband of 65 years, Melvin H. Canter; two sons, Harvey H. Canter and wife Pat of Telford, and Bobby Canter and wife Louise of Elizabethton; three daughters, Shirley Price, Judy Wiseman and Karen Stout, all of Elizabethton; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Nave, Elizabethton; and three special sisters-in-law, Virginia Harrison, Ethel Winters and Ruth Russell, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Canter will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, October 4, at Pleasant Beach Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Fowler and Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, prior to the service, and at the homes of the children at anytime. Music will be provided by Twanna Hollander and Grady and Tammy Russell. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the church at 12:15 p.m. Saturday to go in procession. The graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 5, in the Pearl Bowers Cemetery in Blue Springs with Rev. Mark Fowler and Rev. Jerry Honeycutt officiating. Active pallbearers will be Westley Canter Sr., Harvey W. Canter, Jeffrey Crowe II, Berley A. Canter, Stacey Whitaker and Austin Whitaker. Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip Canter, Don Shepherd, Joseph Price and Joshua Stout.
