He was born in Banner Elk, N.C. (Avery County) and was the son of the late Charles and Frances Crawford Erwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Erwin.
Mr. Erwin was retired from Harris-Tarkett in Johnson City and had also worked at North American Rayon Corporation for 17 years. He was currently employed at Brown’s Hardware and Grocery Store in Hampton.
Mr. Erwin was a member of Elk Valley Baptist Church but attended First Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lou Presnell Erwin, of the home; three sons, Tom Erwin, Banner Elk, and his fiancée, Barbara O’Malley, Hampton, Greg Erwin and his wife, Angie, Hampton, and William “Taz” Erwin and his wife, Brandi, Elizabethton; nine grandchildren, Ashley Erwin, Hampton, Jared Erwin and Wesley Erwin, both of Elizabethton, Jessica Grabowski, Oak Creek, Wis., Taylor O’Malley, Amber Ward, Irelynn Ward, Gabe Vines and Garrett Vines, all of Hampton; a nephew, Jeff Erwin, Elizabethton; and three sisters-in-law, Pat Erwin, Elizabethton, Valerie Miller and her husband, Dale, Johnson City, and Betty Glover and her husband, Norman, Elizabethton. A brother-in-law, Lawrence Presnell, and his wife, Yvette, both of Wisconsin, also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Erwin will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, at First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Nathan Jennings and Rev. Jack Lloyd officiating. Music will be under the direction of Grady and Alicia Holder and Nathan Jennings. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, or at the home at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, in the Elk Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Avery County, N.C. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Vines, Jonathon Kent, Gilbert Presnell, Rick Presnell, David Presnell, Carl Cole, Eddie Presnell and Jimmy Berry. Honorary pallbearers will be everyone whose life was touched by Mr. Erwin. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday.
