Dennis Ray Helmick Sr.

Dennis Ray Helmick Sr., 64, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Administration Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Helmick was a native of Cumberland, Md., but had lived in Carter County since 1984. He was the son of the late Raymond Helmick and Mary Smith Helmick-Grogg.
Mr. Helmick proudly served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Marine Corps and was a retiree from U.S. Textiles after 20 years of service as a supervisor. He was a loving husband and devoted father and a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Lucy Hughes Helmick, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Helmick Jr. and his wife, Lori, Hampton; two daughters, Karen Potter, Hampton, and Sharon Hilman, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Brittany and Danielle Helmick, Justin Shell, Madison Potter, Erica Hilman and Jonah Hilman; a great-granddaughter, Kenzie RayAnn Helmick; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen and Valerie Helmick, Asheville, N.C., and Charlie and Tammy Grogg, Asheville, N.C.; two nephews, Burton Helmick and Brian Grogg; a niece, Christine Helmick; and a great-niece, Scarlet Helmick.
The funeral service for Mr. Helmick will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, September 27, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain. Music will be under the direction of Charlotte Smith. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at the home at anytime. The graveside inurnment service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, September 30, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:45 a.m. Monday. The family would like to express a special thank you to doctors and nurses of the Extended Living Care at the V.A., special friends, Carl “Doodle Bug” Elliott, James Burrow, Mark Roberts and Donald Gregg.
