Bert Shell, 87, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Arthur and Dovie Street Shell.
Mr. Shell was a retired employee of General Motors after 32 years of service. He also was a member of U.A.W. Local 31.
Mr. Shell was a member of First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain and a former member of Roan Mountain Citizens Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He enjoyed working on cars and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Shell and Eddie Joe Shell; a sister, Willie Cox; brothers-in-law, Otto Sheldon, Ralph Sheldon, Leonard Sheldon and Howard Sheldon; sisters-in-law, Marie Gregg and Beulah Harbison; and a nephew, Clifford Sheldon.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Audrey May Sheldon Shell, Roan Highlands Nursing Center; a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Albert “Pete” Taylor, Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Christine Satterfield and husband, Duane, Evergreen, Colo.; a great-grandson, Liam Satterfield, Evergreen, Colo.; a step-grandson, Jason Taylor and wife, Carrie, Elizabethton; a step-great-grandson, Tucker Lee Taylor, Elizabethton; two sisters, Frankie Cox and Jean Frye and companion, Bob Timmons, all of Roan Mountain; and two brothers, Verl Shell, Roan Mountain, and Demps Shell, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Shell will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Gary Edwards, Rev. Tull Oaks Jr. and Rev. Richard Stout officiating. Music will be under the direction of Charlotte Smith. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:30 until 7 p.m., prior to the service hour on Tuesday. Friends may also visit Mrs. Shell at Roan Highlands Nursing Center, or may also call at the home of his daughter, Judith Taylor. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 27, at Shell Cemetery, Hampton Creek, Roan Mountain. Military Honors to be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Shell, Richard Shell, Ted Shell, Bob Timmons, Jason Taylor, Albert “Pete” Taylor, Tom Johnson and Brian Shell. Honorary pallbearers will be Duane Satterfield, Delbert Sheldon, Earl Sheldon, Gary Harbison, Howard Harbison, Glenn Lindsey, John Walgamuth, Duane Scates, Jimmy Farley, Terry Cox and Gary Weimer. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
