Bernard H. Brengard

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Bernard Henry Brengard, 74, of Asheville, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at the Charles George VA Medical Center Hospice.
A native of Montgomery County, Ill., he was a son of the late Dorothy Fortune Notter and step-son of the late Ralph “Shorty” Notter. Bernard was also preceded in death by four brothers, Maurice Brengard, John Brengard, Ralph E. Notter Jr. and Kenneth Brengard.
After graduating from high school, Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He worked with NCI for 17 years and later retired from Continental Teves Inc. He was also a member of the Roan Mountain, Tenn., Masonic Lodge and the Parrott Head Club of Asheville. He enjoyed gardening, chopping wood and building fires in the wintertime.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Roark Brengard; one son, Gary S. Brengard and his wife, Beth, of Fallon, Nev.; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Brengard of Witt, Ill., and Margaret Hagler and her husband, George, of Lancaster, S.C.; and three brothers-in-law, David Roark of Roan Mountain, Tenn., Johnny Roark and his wife, Burma, of Claremont, N.C., and Lonnie Roark of Mooresville, N.C., as well as eight nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 31, at the Western Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel. Military Rites will be conducted by the Buncombe County Veteran’s Council and the North Carolina National Guard. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, December 31, at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. In lieu of flowers, the family graciously asks that memorial donations be made to any Hospice of one’s choice. An online memorial register is available at
