On Saturday morning, Carter County Sheriff’s Department officers were instructed to be on the lookout for a white GMC work truck reportedly stolen from Spruce Pine, N.C., occupied by two men offering to sell a welder and a generator.

CCSD Sgt. Derrick Hamm and Deputy Myles Cook later spotted the described vehicle shortly after 11:30 a.m. traveling south on Highway 143 in Roan Mountain and pulled it over for investigation.

In a report, Hamm wrote that an unidentified male juvenile was driving the pickup and his passenger was identified as 20-year-old Tylor Nathaniel Cook of Elk Park, N.C.

Hamm said that a check on the truck’s vehicle identification number confirmed that it was the vehicle earlier reported stolen.

According to Hamm, a nearby tire store owner approached the officers and told them that the pair sold him a Lincoln welder and generator for $40.

The truck and the equipment were impounded by the CCSD, and Cook and his companion were charged with possession of stolen property over $1,000.

Cook is scheduled to appear in Carter County General Sessions Court on June 4.
