This is in response to the letter regarding the lack of support for the animal shelter fundraiser. I was there and it was lots of fun. The problem wasn't really lack of support, as it was affordability. Admission was $20 and you had to buy your own food and drink. I think it was poorly coordinated.

The general concert and the idea are great. The vendors need to get together more. It would be a lot better to have four people at $5 each buying food and drink rather than one person who can't afford to eat because they spent their last dollar to get in. It would have gone over a lot better if it was for donations with a $5 minimum.

I also don't think there was enough advertising throughout the county. Yes, I saw a few signs in town, but did anyone put any out in Stoney Creek, Hampton or Roan Mountain? I just think it needs better planning. It was a lot of fun this year as well as last. I just hope when they do it next year it is better planned so more people will attend. I also think if it had started later, like maybe 4 or 5 p.m., more people would have come. It started at 1 p.m. and that's very hot in the day to stand outside for a long period of time. I do encourage anyone that didn't get to attend to please make a donation to the animal shelter.

Shortly subsequent to the start of the County Commission meeting and during the delivery of the second public speaker addressing the commission from the podium, a cell phone rang out in the chambers. Would you believe it? A commissioner in one of the very closest chairs to the podium retrieved the phone from his pocket, answered it and carried on a conversation. Talk about unmitigated gall and total lack of respect for the speaker.

In my mind this action reflects how little many of the commissioners have for the opinions and positions of, We the People. It's a real shame only eight were unseated in the most recent election.

However, the mayor-elect made an opening delivery from the public podium and yet a second delivery later, both of which strongly suggested that he will actively pursue a greater level of professionalism as well as compliance with various laws in the immediate future. An upgrade in all of their actions is the only way this bunch has available to them. They sure can't go much lower. Please oh please, taxpayers, show up and fill the public seats. I'm relatively confident that a full house week after week will get their full and undivided attention!
