New finish line this year for Roan Groan

There has been a change to the finish of Saturday’s Nor-Well Roan Groan, but the competition, excitement and grueling challenge for the cyclists is expected to remain top notch.
The first leg of the Johnson City Omnium again starts at Cat Island Park, at 9 a.m. The 55-mile race climbs 5,775 feet in altitude.
The course’s altercation involves the climax of the event, which will now be at Carvers Gap on the North Carolina line. No longer will the final 1.75 miles to the Roan Mountain Gardens be included, since the Pisgah National Forest required $2,000 to use the property.
Event director Reneau Dubberly said there will still be the 7.5-mile climb averaging a seven percent incline increase to the finish line of the 28th edition of the Roan Groan. In all, seven groups race out of downtown Elizabethton.
