Carter County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Mike Little said there was no definitive trigger for a fight early Sunday morning that left a Happy Valley High School teenager dead and another critically injured.

“I don’t know if there was a specific reason why it started,” the investigator said Wednesday. “It was a situation where they were drinking, and through the course of that they wound up getting into a minor altercation that escalated.”

In addition to new interviews with law enforcement officials, the Elizabethton STAR learned more details about the deadly early morning stabbing after reviewing documents released by the Carter County Juvenile Court Wednesday morning. The STAR, on Tuesday, formally requested the documents, which state law says can be released in certain instances relating to the severity of the charge involved.

A 14-year-old, identified by Carter County Juvenile Court documents as Nicholas Willen, was charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault, accused of fatally stabbing 16-year-old Elijah McKinney and wounding another juvenile outside a residence at 212 Cash Hollow Road shortly after 3 a.m.
