Kessler was hired as finance director Monday after interviewing for the position vacated by Kitchens when he was hired as city manager. Kessler has worked for the city since 2006 when she was hired as accounting manager. She was named assistant finance director in January 2011.

Kitchens said 25 individuals applied for the job as Elizabethton’s finance director and four were interviewed Monday. The interview committee consisted of Kitchens, Personnel and Risk Management Director Angie Lyons and Brad Harris with Municipal Technical Advisory Service.

“We did the interviews yesterday and Debbie was the clear choice,” Kitchens said. “Since I had been doing both positions since January, we wanted to get her in place as soon as possible.”
