New animal shelter plans win ‘final’ approval

After years of planning and months of delays, the final site plans for the new Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter have been approved, with a single condition attached.

The Elizabethton Regional Planning Commission unanimously approved the plans, with a condition that the landscaping plan be submitted in writing in the next 60 days.

Director of Planning and Development Jon Hartman said the project would be a nice shelter when it was completed. He noted the building would be built just outside the flood plain, so those restrictions would not apply to the construction.

He said one area of concern was that the landscaping plans for the road frontage and around the building had not been included. Hartman said he had talked with architect Joey White, who said there were plans to add landscaping, but the shelter committee wanted to make sure they had enough funding to complete the building before adding extras.
He said White told him they were going to be working with a local Boy Scout troop to add trees along the property.
