Nearly $250,000 in delinquent taxes owed to Elizabethton for 2011 tax year

Question: When are 2011 delinquent property taxes due to be paid to the City of Elizabethton? How much money are we talking about? 

Answer: 2011 property taxes in the City of Elizabethton became delinquent on April 2, 2012, according to Finance Director Jerome Kitchens. As of June 30, 2012, delinquent property taxes owed the City of Elizabethton for the 2011 tax year totaled $244,516, Kitchens said. On Oct. 1, 2012, the City Attorney turned over 2011 delinquent property tax collections to the Carter County Clerk and Master for collection in Chancery Court.

The deadline to pay 2012 property taxes in the City of Elizabethton is April 2, 2013. If not paid by the deadline, interest will accrue at 1.5 percent per month beginning April 3, 2013. From 1998 to 2011, the City of Elizabethton has collected $504,974 in delinquent property taxes, Kitchens said.
