Dan Crowe was a successful track and cross country coach in addition to being a spectacular teacher and role model to the people of Kingsport for many years. He was that, plus historian and community legend, for those who remember him in Carter County.

Coach Crowe passed away on Dec. 1, 2005, at the age of 75. But thanks to assistant track coach and art teacher Paige Hubbard at Dobyns-Bennett High School, his memory will live on.

A large mural featuring him and the late coach Tom Coughenour is now painted on the high school track in Kingsport — and is named in their honor. And their accomplishments are listed as well.

Drawing the initial design, Hubbard then gave it to Kathy Blair of Murals & More in Johnson City. There she created a masterpiece of the two legends who appear to be looking point blank at you.

Crowe coached for 13 years at Dobyns-Bennett from 1967-1979.
