A city man narrowly escaped injury Tuesday night when an uprooted tree crashed through the roof of his mobile home.
Elizabethton Fire Department Capt. Todd Montgomery said the tree, loosened by the week’s heavy rains, fell on the back end of the home at about 9 p.m. Tuesday and punctured the roof above resident David Sellers’ head.
“He got really lucky,” Montgomery said of the resident, who was not injured in the incident.
City firefighters responded to the scene and attempted to clear away the felled tree, but the captain called off the operation because of the unsafe, wet conditions.
“It just got too dangerous,” Montgomery said. “So we made sure the power was cut to the trailer so a fire wouldn’t start, locked it up and made sure he had a place to stay.”
Montgomery said Sellers spent the night with a friend or family member.
