It had been six years since the Johnson County High boys golf program had a moment quite like the one it had Monday, but it was worth the wait.
The Longhorns ended a six-year dry spell that had been in existence since the 2007 District 1-A/AA Championship in the same event by clinching a regional berth and a second-place tournament finish at Elizabethton Golf Course.
Expectations were high coming into this tournament with how well the Longhorns were performing, but when the scores came in on Monday, it was obvious the team could do something very special.
No question Sullivan South was going to finish first, who shot a possible tournament record 281 for a 54-stroke triumph — with Elizabethton and Johnson County tied for second with a 335 with Sullivan East still out on the course.
When the Patriots did not make the top three, both Elizabethton and Johnson County had clinched spots in the region and played a playoff for second, won by Johnson County.
