Little Wilbur good place to be for camping

It might not be the “Haven of Rest,” yet the Little Wilbur campground might be the next best thing. On a cool Thursday night, the smell of burning wood filled the air as campers sat around the fire with fishing poles in place on the bank and supper on the table.
One Elizabethton resident knows the area like the back of his hand.
Maynard Peters has camped there for over 30 years. He spent six of those overseeing the area. Thursday, he and his family was enjoying the surroundings with their granddaughter, Liberty Shell, and his little buddy Nicholas Banner.
“I’ve been several places and camped at many of them, but I’ve never found anything like this,” said Peters. “We’ve got a television that picks up six channels but we don’t watch it much. We stay outside. Up here the people are nice and friendly. Plus you can’t beat the peace and quiet.”
Elvia Jarrett and her son, Nicholas, were visiting the Peters when I pulled up. She admitted to being hooked on camping.
“We’ve been coming up here for 13 years,” said Jarrett. “We started in a tent and now we own our own camper.”
