JOHNSON CITY — Coach J.R. Campbell and the Little Milligan Buffaloes march on.
The Buffs breezed past Westview 54-40 in the TMSAA East Tennessee Area 1 A consolation game on Wednesday night at Ridgeview Elementary. Little Milligan (19-4) thus qualifies for the Sectional tournament, which begins on Saturday at Pigeon Forge Middle School.
“We laid everything on the line,” Campbell said. “I was proud of them. We thought we could win this, and naturally we wanted to win this so we could go down to the state.”
The ultra-talented trio of Jose Velazquez, Dakota Crumley and Charlie Butler pumped in 14 points each to pace the Buffs.
“A lot of teams have turned in their jerseys,” Campbell said. “We want to play another game.”
The former Johnson County coach, who once guided that program to over 100 victories in a four-year span, pointed out he took some advice from the recently retired winningest coach prep coach in the state.
“Charlie Bayless told me, if you’ve got a guard and you’ve got a forward you can beat a lot of teams,” Campbell said. “He said if you’ve got three people you can beat a whole lot of teams.”
The coach stressed his players used the previous evening’s semifinal loss as motivation to stay alive.
