Employees of the Elizabethton Electric Department place new lights on the city’s historic community Christmas tree, a Fraser fir planted in 1861,

New lights using energy-efficient LEDs were placed on the tree Friday after a fundraising effort to replace strands that had become brittle with age.

Keith Hart with the Carter County University of Tennessee Extension Office estimated it had been 10-12 years since the strands on the tree had been completely redone. The fundraising campaign collected $2,600 toward the $3,200 cost of the new lights.
