Desperate times call for desperate measures, and in the last 43 seconds of the District 1-AA girls basketball tournament Happy Valley found itself in a desperate situation.

Down by three against Unicoi County on Friday night at Bayless Gymnasium, the Lady Warriors senior guard Mackenzie Blankenship came up big.

It wasn’t just Blankenship, however, as junior guard Annie Woods and sophomore post Kalee Johnson played pivotal roles as HV (16-14) rallied past the Lady Blue Devils 61-58 to advance to a semifinal game on Monday against top-seeded Elizabethton — and earn a regional berth.

In the last chapter of senior guard Brooke Brown’s fine career at Johnson County, she went out like a champion. Brown scored a game-high 22 points and almost single handedly kept the Lady Longhorns in a game dominated by South (16-12).

“I’m proud of all the young players on this team,” Brown said. “They bust their (tails) and I wish we could have gotten them playing time earlier, but it’s good they got it now instead of waiting until the start of next season.”
