Landfill eyes options after losing key customer9:52 am | September 9, 2013
The Carter County Landfill has already faced funding shortfalls in the past year, and after losing two more revenue sources, more cutbacks may be required to maintain operations.
During a Friday meeting of the county’s Landfill Committee, Landfill Director Benny Lyons reported that, in addition to the loss of Allied Waste, Blue Ridge Trash has also stopped delivering to the Carter County Landfill.
“Blue Ridge, which hauls the household waste for the county, they decided they could get a cheaper rate,” Lyons said. “They were our largest customer. They left on Sept. 1, going to the new company in Blountville.”
That company, Advanced Disposal, also contracts with Carter County.
During its meeting on Feb. 19, the county commission opted to enter into a new disposal contract with Advanced Disposal, which offered a cheaper rate than the county’s previous disposal company, Allied Waste. After failing to win the bid, Allied ceased its usage of the Carter County Landfill.
