Earlier this year, the county’s Landfill Committee suspended Carter County Cleanup, or Free Day, until the fall of this year.
With the fiscal year winding down and budget requests being heard, Landfill Director Benny Lyons is asking the county to help him pay for it.
On Thursday night, Lyons requested an operating budget of $150,000 for the next fiscal year, which would almost double his past year’s budget.
“The extra operating transfers that I’m asking for would be for federal projects,” Lyons said. “That comes up to $70,000.”
Lyons presented the committee with an itemized list describing where the additional monies would go, if they were awarded.
According to Lyons, $20,000 would be put toward the facility at Elk Mills, $10,000 would be used to pay the lease on the scales at the Carter County Landfill, and $40,000 would be used to pay for Free Day, which would allow county residents to bring their waste to the landfill at no cost.
For the 2012 Free Day, Lyons had previously estimated his costs to be approximately $41,000.
After Lyons made his request, Finance Director Ingrid Deloach said that, despite some rumors, Lyons had not been budgeted this amount in the past.
