Happy Valley will need a miracle finish to avoid the play-in game, but it could enter the district tournament more dangerous than a cocked gun. League-leading Unicoi County escaped Bayless Gymnasium with a 72-68 overtime win Saturday after watching a 15-point third quarter lead evaporate.
“They were getting rebounds and we weren’t getting back in transition at all in the first quarter,” said Happy Valley head coach Larry Abel. “They got a big lead, but we began to chip away in the second quarter and got back in it. We dug ourselves a hole in the third quarter because we couldn’t hit shots. We asked our kids to lay it on the line in the fourth quarter and give it all they had defensively and rebounding, and they did. We lost the game, but I couldn’t be any prouder of them.”
The Lady Warriors trailed 21-10 after one with half of their dozen points coming from freshman Kalee Johnson.
