Lady Rangers, Hampton boys advance

JOHNSON CITY — The District 1-A basketball tournament tipped off at Science Hill’s brand new Topper Palace Friday evening and saw the Unaka Lady Rangers open with a 51-42 victory over a game University High squad.
In the nightcap, Hampton (18-13) overwhelmed North Greene by a 60-36 tally behind a great rebounding effort by sophomore post Stanley Valentine. Both squads will move forward to the regional tournament after completion of district play.
Unaka (13-16) started slowly against a Lady Jr. Buccaneers team looking to play the game at a snail’s pace. Senior guards Alicia Colbaugh and Kassie Winters, however, carried the day for Unaka with three-point shooting — and each scored in double figures.
