South Greene’s quest to cool the sizzling Lady Highlanders fell by the wayside Thursday night inside of Sonny Smith Gymnasium. Cloudland remained hotter than a two-dollar pistol by knocking off the Lady Rebels 55-50 in a game that featured two of the area’s hottest teams.
The Lady Rebels (17-7) had won eight of their last nine games and Cloudland (15-9) had recorded seven straight wins. Something had to give.
The Lady ’Landers fell behind 6-2, but took the lead for good on a three-ball by Martina Presnell at the 2:12 mark of the opening quarter. They never trailed again in the game.
“Those threes helped a lot because they opened up the inside and helped get us in our offense,” said Cloudland coach Matt Birchfield. “We knew they were going to double down on Brooke, and we’ve been working on some things to offset that.”
