GRAY — A double-espresso, wake-me-up-early Johnson City Honda Trailblazer Classic opened on Wednesday morning at Snyder Gym with a 10 a.m. clash between the Hampton Lady Bulldogs and Sullivan South.
The Lady Bulldogs (10-3) erased a 12-point Lady Rebels lead behind 32 points from senior guard Dorothy Dugger as Hampton prevailed 66-59 despite a double-double from Rebels post Kayla Tipton.
Tipton scored 17 points and took down 15 rebounds (eight on the offensive glass), and South built an early 23-12 lead after one period.
Johnson County 52
Senior guard Sarah Swift scored a game-high 30 points as the Lady Longhorns (3-9) played their best game of the season and posted a big win to remain in the winner’s bracket for a 5:30 p.m. contest today.
“For us right now, it’s about drawing two defenders to you on the drives and finishing plays,” said Lady Longhorns head coach Todd Whittemore. “We have to put ourselves in good spots. Not picking your dribble up at halfcourt and not trying for a home run pass every time.
“We need to make the routine plays consistently and not the spectacular one from time to time. We’ll get better if we can do that.”
