GRAY — A hot start set the tone for Hampton’s girls. Unaka struggled to find an answer.

Building an 18-point lead by the half behind Monica Olvera and Alexis Bowers, the Lady Bulldogs earned a region berth and advanced in District 1-A tournament play with a 73-52 quarterfinal victory Friday at Daniel Boone High School.

“We did a lot of good things early and we had to do that because we knew the longer they hung around the more confidence they would pick up,” said Lady Bulldogs coach Bud Hazelwood. “We came out and played pretty well, pushed the ball well at times. We got lost on defense a few times and gave up about six threes, but, overall, a pretty solid effort.”

A slow start, a runaway finish for the Lady Highlanders.

Cloudland led just 10-6 at the end of one, then outscored the Lady Bucs 29-13 in the second quarter behind strong frames from Courtney Clarke, Courtney Wilson, Kendall Mull and DeAndra Jarrett, each of whom tallied multiple baskets in the period.
