Knox County mayor’s money disappears, comes back

KNOXVILLE — Knoxville police say when word got around about Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett’s cash being missing, the money suddenly turned up.

But police spokesman Darrell DeBusk told the Knoxville News Sentinel the department continues to investigate.

On April 1, Burchett handed his chief executive assistant nine $100 bills to put into his personal account. When Diana Wilson was unable to reach the credit union in time, she brought back the cash and put it into an envelope under a mat on Burchett’s desk. She went to retrieve the money the next morning and it was gone.

DeBusk said the missing money reappeared sometime after 5 p.m. April 4. The county constituent services manager found it near a desk in the mayor’s suite, outside Burchett’s office.
