Jury deliberates in fatal Knoxville hit and run

KNOXVILLE — A Knox County jury is deliberating a vehicular homicide case against a young driver who left the scene of an accident.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported jurors deliberated for about five hours on Tuesday without reaching a verdict in the trial of 23-year-old Curtis Scott Harper. The panel resumes deliberations Wednesday.

In closing arguments, prosecutor Sarah Keith told jurors Harper gave no thought to what happened to Nelzon A. Soto, Chasity Elaine Thornell or Thornell’s unborn daughter, all of whom were killed.

But defense attorney James W. Price Jr. argued his client thought he hit a disabled car on May 30. Price conceded Harper acted foolishly and cowardly in trying to conceal the accident, but didn’t know he hit a person.
