The road to a tournament title opened for another squad from the Carter County community on the third night of the Elizabethton Star Winter Classic.
With a sound victory over Abingdon on the hardwood of the East Tennessee Sports Complex Tuesday night, the Happy Valley Jr. Warriors boys varsity squad booked their ticket to a championship showdown with Sevier Thursday night with first place on the line.
The Warriors now stand alone with the Cloudland Lady Jr. Highlanders JV squad as the only two teams from Landon Carter’s county to advance to the championship waltz at the entrance of Stoney Creek.
“Boom Baby!” – was the sentiment most heartedly echoed by all from Warrior Hill in attendance as Austin Hicks pirouetted, slashed and outright charged his way down the lane for 25 points in the post as the Jr. Warriors rode a big second half all the way to a 51-34 semifinal victory over Abingdon (Va.).
