Johnson County basketball fans enjoyed a “Rocky Mountain High” after the Longhorns swept Unaka Saturday night. The Longhorns shocked the Rangers 56-55 in boys’ play while the Lady Steers were victorious 49-37.
In the boys’ contest, Brian Dempsey converted a three-point play with 13 seconds remaining — allowing Johnson County to pull off the upset.
The ’Horns trailed 47-40 going into the final quarter, but doubled the score on the Rangers 16-8 — which proved to be the difference.

Coach Todd Whittemore’s team got the signature road win it had been looking for by knocking off the Lady Rangers. This came after Friday’s 51-50 heart-breaking loss at Unicoi County.
The Lady Longhorns trailed 12-9 after one, but outscored Unaka 19-8 in the second quarter to go up 28-20.
“It was great the way our team bounced back after Friday’s loss,” said Whittemore. “I was happy with what our team brought to the table.”
