Built “country strong” is more than just a saying in Northeast Tennessee.
Carter County was the site for the 33rd annual Hampton High School weightlifting competition on Saturday morning. Multiple schools throughout the area were able to flex their muscle throughout a full day of lighting events.
Jacob Slagle, from Elizabethton High School, took home the the Bob Peoples award, named after the 1949 champion who deadlifted 725 pounds while weighing in at 181.
Slagle (161 lbs.) squared away and hauled in a deadlift of 500 to take home the prestigious honor.
Johnson County High School was the overall winners for the boys division while Elizabethton High School netted gold in the girls division.
