It’s tree time tonight

It’s time to light up the night.

Elizabethton and Carter County officially kick off the 2013 holiday season tonight with the city’s annual lighting of the Fraser fir on East Elk Avenue.

Festivities will begin at around 5:30, and the tree will be lit shortly after 6 p.m.

The Bonnie Kate Cafe will supply hot chocolate and cider at the tree lighting, and those warm beverages might well be needed. Forecasts suggest today will be considerably colder than Monday, with a chance of rain or snow. Snow showers are possible around tree-lighting time with a temperature near 30.

Music will also help keep the crowd warm: the Elizabethton High School Choral Group, Brittany Kyte and the Happy Valley Trumpeters will perform. The Washington County Regiment of the North Carolina Militia will perform the traditional volley at the end of the ceremony. The treelighting kicks off the season and sets the stage for the annual Christmas parade, set for Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
