In sports, it’s not uncommon for a player to try out for weeks or months before he or she finally earns a roster spot.

It turns out, the Carter County school system works the same way.

On Thursday afternoon, the Carter County Board of Education voted unanimously to name Interim Director of Schools Kevin Ward the full-time director beginning July 1.

“He’s had a full year’s tryout to make the team,” said School Board Member David Buck. “I think he’s passed with flying colors. I, for one, have all the confidence in the world with him.”

Ward expressed his gratitude to the board before presenting them with the director’s report.

“I thank you all very much for the confidence you’ve placed in me,” Ward said. “I look forward to the challenge.”

Board member Jerry McMahan, who made the motion to name Ward the full-time director, added that Ward’s accomplishments spoke to the level of his commitment.
