Hunter boys, girls deliver Stoney Creek sweep

From the opening tip to the final horn Thursday night was a great night to be a Tiger in Ranger Country.

Hunter’s boys and girls basketball teams besieged Joe E. Taylor Gymnasium coming away with a pair of upset victories as the Little Watauga schedule closes to within four games of the tournament.

The Lady Tigers gutted out a 39-34 decision over the previously unbeaten Lady Rangers (11-1) behind solid guard play in the transition game combined with a defense that is certainly responding to Christmas break adjustments.

Shooting guard Monica Honeycutt led the way for the Blue and Yellow with 12 high speed points, while teammate Renya Austin controlled the post to the tune of 11 points and seven boards.

From the outset it was apparent that the Lady Tigers were intent on bringing more defensive intensity to the table. A 9-2 run to open, offensively, was sparked by Austin’s early three-point play inside. From that point forward Austin would remain in control inside while the Rangers struggled to overcome turnovers.
