Investigators comb a wooded area about 40 feet from Gap Creek Road where a survey crew discovered skeletal remains Wednesday.

A crew surveying land for an expansion project along Gap Creek Road Wednesday discovered human skeletal remains in a wooded area a short distance from the roadway, between Dry Creek and Loveless roads.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes said the death is currently being investigated as a homicide, a common practice for unattended deaths and found bodies.

Mathes said a wallet with an identification card was found with the body, but declined to release the name until the remains are positively identified.

At 4 p.m. Wednesday, investigators from the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Highway Patrol searched for evidence in the area surrounding the body.

THP officers worked to map the ground about 40 feet from the road where a handful of yellow evidence markers were scattered among trees and rhododendron.
