JOHNSON CITY — It wasn’t a Picasso, but Cloudland’s win over University High could turn out to be the masterpiece needed to win the Watauga Valley Conference championship.
The Highlanders brushed University High 44-42 inside of Brooks Gymnasium, bumping the Junior Bucs into a virtual tie for second place with Hampton and Unaka.
The Rangers and Bulldogs lost at UH, which makes the win even bigger. The Highlanders have games remaining with Hampton and North Greene at home and Unaka on the road. They hold a one-game lead over the pair.
“I’m happy with the win, but disappointed that we didn’t put them away when we had the big lead, said Cloudland coach Brandon Carpenter. “I felt like some of our older guys got comfortable and let up a little bit, and you can’t do that against a team like University High on the road. But it’s a win and we’ll take it.”
