Thunderstorms, potential hail expected for Thursday afternoon

Officials are calling for thunderstorms with a chance of hail and heavy winds to hit Carter County by the middle of Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, a cold front will hit the area later today, and the storms are, currently, expected to hit Carter County by 6:30 p.m.

The Elizabethton/Carter County Emergency Management Agency said large hail, heavy winds, and up to an inch of rain are all possibilities.

Although several areas of the county have recently suffered flooding that resulted from severe weather, EMA Director Andrew Worley said that, as of yet, the NWS doesn’t think this particular storm will be as severe.

“They’re not expecting any main stream flooding,” Worley said. “We may see puddles in low-lying areas where water would stand. I don’t think anybody is forecasting any problems with flooding. The wind and hail could be an issue.”

Worley added that his office would be providing an update on the storm in the early afternoon. More details to come as it develops.
