Healthy Children Celebration set for Friday

By

Several area businesses and organizations are partnering to offer a healthy children celebration in honor of World Breastfeeding Week 2013.

The event is planned for Friday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Carter County Health Department Annex.
“World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually across the world and we feel that it is important to celebrate those in the Tri-Cities area giving their little ones the best start at life,” said BABE Breastfeeding Coalition President Jilian Reece.

The worldwide theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2013 is Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers, with a focus on supporting the peer counselor program.

“Many times breastfeeding success is determined by peer support, so the support offered to breastfeeding mothers by peer counselors at area health departments is crucial,” Reece said.

“We are excited to hold this event at one of our area health departments to highlight the difference they are making in supporting breastfeeding mothers in the region.”

The event is open to all families in the Tri-Cities area and will feature free food, numerous door prizes and entertainment. The event is being sponsored by the Carter County Health Department, in partnership with BABE Breastfeeding Coalition and the Breastfeeding/Healthy Children Support Group from Village Pediatrics and Breastfeeding Medicine.

“We have an amazing line-up of activities and entertainment throughout the event, “Reece said.
She said vendors for the event include Hands On! Museum, Kindermusik, Northeast Community Credit Union, ReadNPlay and Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library.

Each participating business or organization will provide an activity for participants and two free Kindermusik classes will also be offered during the event.

Questions about the event can be directed to the Carter County Health Department at 543-2521 or to BABE Breastfeeding Coalition at www.facebook.com/BABE.Breastfeeding.Coalition.
