Caught up in a bargain-hunting mood, I offered Lees-McRae College men’s basketball coach Steve Hardin a penny for his thoughts on last week’s signing of Sullivan North great Chase Arnold.
After Hardin put in more than two cents on the subject, I knew I had gotten a real deal.
Representing a major recruiting win for Hardin, the Golden Raiders’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder agreed to dribble just across the state line — to Banner Elk, N.C. — and suit up for the NCAA Division-II Bobcats.
“I know his numbers look really good,” Hardin, an Elizabethton High alum, said Tuesday. “In East Tennessee, going all the way to Knoxville, this year there’s a lot of really good high school players — but there’s only a handful of guys that can be really good college players. He and the point guard from Science Hill — (Will) Adams — and C.J. (Good) from Science Hill are probably, I guess, the best three around that’s got a chance to be pretty good at the next level.”
