Hampton, Providence split pair

JOHNSON CITY — Providence Academy and Hampton each got a taste of success Tuesday, splitting a twinbill on the Knights’ home field.
Providence triumphed 5-2 in Game 1. The Bulldogs countered with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.
The Knights (17-8) started strong in the opener, scoring four runs with the aid of RBI singles from Jack Weaver and Landon Phemister. Evan Tyree knocked in brother Blake in the fourth.
Freshman Caleb Backus went the distance for the victory, striking out four batters.
David Finney had a pair of base hits for the ’Dogs.
Providence seniors Blake Tyree and Daniel Gobble were honored before the second game of the twinbill. From there, the two teams traded first inning runs.
