A pair of starters were sidelined, but Hampton’s basketball team met the challenge on Friday night.
The Bulldogs prevailed 56-50 over Sunbright in the Climate Controllers Classic at VanHuss-White Gymnasium. The Tigers pulled within three points in the final minute, but Hampton was 15 of 17 at the foul line in the fourth quarter — and that sealed the deal down the stretch.
“The kids stepped up,” Hampton coach Ned Smith said. “We had some kids out of position there, and kids stepped up and played real well. I thought our pressure defense in the fourth quarter helped us maintain our lead.”
Stanley Valentine paced the Bulldogs (8-3) with 16 points and 17 rebounds. That included six points in both the first and fourth quarters.
