Hagan would like to please his backers at Bristol3:14 am | June 14, 2013
BRISTOL — Greeneville’s Allen Johnson isn’t the only NHRA driver looking for a big showing at his home track. The current Funny Car points leader wants to claim his stake on familiar asphalt.
A native of Christiansburg, Va., a two-hour drive from Bristol Dragway, Matt Hagan looks to put on a show for his family and friends, plus add a Ford Thunder Valley Nationals trophy to his mantle.
The 2011 Funny Car champion and Don Schumacher Racing standout will get his chance this weekend as the NHRA Mellow Yellow Series rolls into the region.
“I’d love to win this track,” Hagan said Thursday prior to the NHRA Celebrity Golf Tournament at Country Club of Bristol. “It’s so close to home. I’ve got so many friends and family coming. At driving race cars.”
A two-time winner on the NASCAR Nationwide Series, Leffler, 37, was quite successful locally on the half-mile at Bristol Motor Speedway, registering the Food City 250 pole in 2007 followed by a second-place finish.
